The commonly used cross-sectional forms are diverse, including single-box single-chamber, single-box triple-chamber, double-box single-chamber, triple-box single-chamber, multi-box single-chamber, diagonal side plate trapezoidal, single-box with more than three side plates multi-chamber, and flat steel box girders. Among them, the double-box single-chamber section is the most widely used, while multi-box single-chamber is often used for wider bridges. Flat steel box girders have a smaller ratio of height to width and mainly play a role in the ribs of suspension bridges, cable-stayed bridges, and arch bridges, and are rarely seen in beam bridges. Single-box multi-chamber steel box girders with more than three side plates are less frequently used due to the difficulty in manufacturing and installation.

They are quick to install and easy to maintain, can be made into large units in the factory, reducing on-site connection work, ensuring installation quality and accuracy. The closed box structure also facilitates painting, anti-corrosion, and rust prevention, making subsequent manual maintenance simple.
